A joint effort to address the health care needs of unhoused people in and around the city of Grand Rapids is taking a major step forward.

Catherine’s Health Center and Crossroads Bible Church have launched a clinic with an open door for anyone to get the primary medical care they need. While the work between the two organizations has been ongoing for some time, the clinic officially opened May 9 in the church building on Grand Rapids’ West Side.

“This combined effort has grown organically, and we want a place that people feel they can belong,” said Glori Goodrich, operations director, and Bethany Barber, neighbor care director, both of whom work for Crossroads Bible Church.

“We want to be able to help some of the most marginalized in our community feel at home and receive the services they need most, and we can’t do it alone.”…

Many of Catherine’s Health Center’s patients know that it’s more than just a doctor’s office. In addition to providing high quality medical, dental and behavioral health care, Catherine’s also offers a wide range of programs and services to help patients live their healthiest and fullest lives. Catherine’s understands that health encompasses many facets that happen beyond the walls of an exam room. No one at Catherine’s knows this better than the community health workers.

Community health workers (CHW) are responsible for improving the health and wellbeing of the populations served by assisting individuals and families with access to available community resources and health programs. Catherine’s has several CHWs, one at each of their sites to meet the unique needs of that specific community…
